Subject: Re: [DBY] early census records?

Dear Lydia
Any census returns taken before 1841 were purely for the rich and the
landowners. They were very sketchy and no help to anyone researching
families as they didn't give lists of people living in houses, etc.
Any searching before 1841 can be done back to 1837 for BMDs and before that
you need to look at Church registers and sometimes, as a rough guide, the IGI.
After 1841 the censuses were taken every ten years but there was no census in
1941 because of the War. A there is a 100 year rule on them, the latest
you can see is '1901' which may be available on line sometime but at the
moment it is not available. You could ask at Matlock if they have the
Derbyshire copy on fiche but not all Record Centres have it.
