Hi
Re Church Gresley records (including Swad etc.) - there are some holes
in IGI coverage. I have had the film of the PRs today and have
transcribed 1837 -1840 baptisms which is one of the holes. When I've
typed them I will offer them to Brett. Brett's web pages have the
details from 1841 onwards but there could be holes or errors on the BT
etc. (a lot of IGI is based on BTs not PRs) - Brett's page tells you the
coverage and the parish changes. You can look at the Library Catalogue
on the FamilySearch web site too.
There is
1839 20 Oct John s of Thomas & Elizabeth, of Swad, labourer
Birth records started in 1837 and are on the GRO index - some of the
index has been transcribed on FreeBMD but the coverage for 1840s has big
gaps. You could try GRO index fiche for Martha and for deaths. Before
mid 1837 there were no general birth or death records although for some
baptisms the minister recorded birth date. Even when civil registration
had started, not everyone was included.
Birth entries on IGI are usually from private researchers and need to be
treated with caution.
Beware of ages on 1841 census adults were supposed to be to a multiple
of 5 years.
Also people giving Ch Gresley as place of birth in census etc. may not
have been accurate so try nearby parishes in Derbys and Leics (e.g.
Netherseal)
