Can't say specifically, but undoubtedly it was named for one
of the Lingos in the area. Some of these place-names are not
that old, however. I'm a descendant of Betts families in the
area, and I found that Betts Pond outside of Millsboro was
actually owned by the Burton family for much of the 1700s and
1800s. It passed into the hands of a Betts in (if memory
serves correctly) the late 1800s for a while.

I'd recommend Robert Lingo's page at:

or you can email him at .

"Of" means "son of." Back then there were many cases of
people with the same first and last name, and middle names
didn't become popular until the 1800s, so early on they were
often told apart by these father-son combinations ("William
of Samuel" and "Jonathan of Abraham" and so on).

I'm not a Lingo descendant, but my grandfather's best friend
in Milton DE was an R. Davis Lingo born around 1890. There
grew to be many, many Lingos in Sussex Co (almost as many as
there are Burtons).
