Cynthia:
I tried to find James FERGUS (as well as any reasonable variant spellings of
the surname) on Family Tree Maker Census Index CD #311 for the 1790 census.
Actually, no copy of the 1790 census for Delaware survives so the listings
come from a "census substitute" compiled from several extant tax lists and
other local records.
Unfortunately, did not find any listing for any likely candidate in Sussex
Co. However, I also checked the 1800 Census Index (CD #312) and found the
following entry which may be of some use to you.
FURGUS, Mary Sussex Co, DE p. 315
02011-001002
The numbers reference the persons in the household by age groups. This
household contained 2 white males age 10-15, 1 white male age 26-44, one
white male age 45+; 1 white female (presumably Mary) age 16-25 and 2 "free
persons" of indeterminant age (most probably, free blacks). The entry is
interesting in that Mary, a young woman, is listed as head of a household in
which there are present at least two grown white men who would have been
expected to be in that role.
Hope this helps you.
Regards,
