Subject: [DESUSSEX] need lhelp on a newspaper clipping --poem sent by the Milford Bard to delaware gazette
Date: Fri, 29 Jun 2001 18:2:15 -0400
I recenty found a copy of THE LIFE OF JOHN LOFLAND,"THE MILFORD
BARD" by William W. Smithers 1894 and I found some curious other 'little' things
inside...both stuffed and pasted in the book.
1. a preprinted envelope belonging to: Frank R. Zebley
1302
King Street
Wilmington,
Delaware
and a clipping from THE BALTIMORE STAR DATED IN
PENCIL 1-28-1945 of an article about Edar Allen Poe called THE JINGLE
MAN OF BALTIMORE by Victor Thaddeus enclosed in this
envelope. ALSO,
2. pasted on the back of the contents page is a poem cut from THE DELAWARE
GAZETTE ...old, brown spots but in good condition.(no date) :
Its says: " For The Delaware Gazette"
"THE HOME OF MY HEART"
(followed
by the contents of the poem)
and ending with: " MILFORD BARD
Baltimore."
I feel this book may have belonged to Frank R. Zebley (died
1969, New Castle, DE )..whom I consider one of the greatest of
Delaware authors and historians ... and that it might have been him
(perhaps, someonelse) who pasted the old news clipping sent by John Lofland to
the Delaware Gazette as records show him living in Baltimore from the
years 1838-1846.
My questions are:
1. Since I don't have a copy of John Lofland's-- 1853 POETICAL AND PROSE
WRITING FROM THE MILFORD BARD-- or afford it and I am hoping someone might do a
lookup if they have a copy of the book, I would be most
appriciative to know if this clipping (of the poem-- THE
HOME OF MY HEART---sent from Lofland in Baltimore and printed in The Delaware
Gazette) was included in the above mentioned 1853
book.
2.Finally, is there a repository of old DELAWARE GAZETTE
newspapers especially for the period I'm looking for from 1838-1846
that can be accessed to find the newspaper clipping I found?
Perhaps also, if it was found to have been included in Lofland's
1853 book: POETICAL AND PROSE..... it may have a date.with it too. i sur am
during alot of hoping.
Either way, as a collector of Delaware
books and a lifelong historian of Sussex County (by hobby),I find for me that
this book and its inclosed 'treasures' ...one I my greatest 'little'
discoveries perhaps yet.
P.S. Are ther any avid fans of the Milford Bard out there like me?
Sincerely,
CHUCK ROSS...San Francisco
