What was the criteria for being an authentic Colonial person of DE or MD ? HOH? Beginning and ending when? Landowner? Tithe payer? Baptism? Marriage?

[input] [input] [input] [input] Dear Elizabeth -
My ancestry was in Old Somerset in or around the town of Delmar when my great-grandfather Waitman/Wateman HASTINGS' oldest son Eli was born there about 1845.

Waitman's father was James Hastings b. + or -1775 and his mother Alafare/Allifair (various other spellings) daughter of John BENNETT and _____. [Mrs Bennett may also have been Allafare/Allifair/......, as it was the name given the oldest daughter who died young.]

Recently it has been reported that an old Bible shows James Hastings' mother as Allifair WILLS. James' 1833 will names his father as Obediah - birth ca 1750 or before (1772 land patent).

I am a little skeptical that James's mother and wife had the same very uncommon given name. If it were 'Mary' or 'Margaret' or 'Elizabeth', I wouldn't quibble.

The name Allifair - again, variously spelled - appears several times in other families in the area and in that era. Was it a valid, pretty-sounding name or did the compiler of that Bible record (who probably knew or heard of James' wife Alafare/Allifair/ ...) make a mistake ?????

John Lyon purports that the surname may have been read WILLS for WELLS from old script.

Do the COLONIAL FAMILIES of DELAWARE show this WILLS/WELLS gal connected with this HASTINGS-BENNETT family?

Thank you for consideration and the time it takes.

PS: - Re Vols. 8 and 9 - Do new additions contain newly-found material and/or corrections to previous volumes?

PPS:-Also haven't been able to find parents for Solomon COLLINS or
wife Nancy WALSTON, or John BENNETT and his unknown wife.
