Subject: [DEU-LADBERGEN-L] Dirksmeier clan from Brochterbeck
Date: Sun, 26 Mar 2000 20:06:40 -0500

I've just found this newsgroup. My maternal line <Dirksmeier> is from
Brochterbeck and his wife <Pluemer> is from neighboring Ibbenburen.

I have 2 questions: Many of the vital records I have looked at in the
1700's and early 1800's have the title of Colonist regarding my direct
lineage. What does this signify?

Second - it looks like one of my direct ancestors was DETERMAN. He
married Anna Catharina Dircksmeyer in 1745 and apparently changed his
name to DIRCKSMEYER after that. I am guessing that Anna Catharine had
lands that as part of the marriage agreement they had to stay in her
name. Are there any other possible reasons and how would I validate
this?

Any help is appreciated.
