Looking back, I'm not sure that I've directly answered your question....
My view is that if the DFHS were to look at the Internet as a positive
advertising tool (for them) as well as information provision (for the
punters), then their financial position would be greatly enhanced, since I
would think that many more people would subscribe to the Society to get
access to more detailed data and information.
I have got the very firm impression that the Society see the Internet as a
competitor, not as a friend, hence their bland view that the only Internet
approach would be to provide lots of data with free access hence no more
subscriptions. Although, as a computer consultant, I've tried to argue a
case, I am not met with any warmth....to date at least!!
