TO JOHN LERWILL, JOHN FRAYNE, and others using this list as a medium to
criticise the D. F. H. S.
I personally consider that this slagging match has gone far enough.
Those who work on the committee and in the Tree House are UNPAID
VOLUNTEERS and in my view do a fantastic job. Do those of you who are
complaining volunteer for the family history society in your locality?
If not the answer is obvious.
I have no way of knowing how many researchers have been put off joining
the Society by the winging over the last few days, which was started
when we received the excellent members fiche that accompanied the latest
edition of the Society's magazine. However if anyone is still thinking
whether or not to join, I for one consider that any researcher of a
family that originated in Devon would be missing a great opportunity by
not joining the D. F. H. S. The magazine, published four times a year,
is
far better value than the ten pounds per annum membership fee. Every
quarter I contact at least one other researching the same names as
myself, and have contacted three that are on this fiche, all of who have
resulted in good leads.
Yes I do live in Devon and can easily reach the Tree House, but I rarely
visit without meeting somebody who has travelled miles to visit, and is
full of praise for the facilities and the VOLUNTEERS. If you have a
complaint, send it in writing to the Secretary so that it can be
discussed at the next A. G. M. That is the appropriate place for
discussions of this nature, not this list where untold damage can be
done to a Society that exists for the good of it's members. If you two
in particular wish to carry on with the moaning, PLEASE do it off
list, and leave the rest of us to use it for what it is intended for.
