Dear List,

I'm in a bit of a quandary and wonder if anyone out there can help? I have
found a book (Caunter Family Records, by Frederick Lyde Caunter) which has
quite a lot of information about our line of Caunters. There are copies of
the book held at four libraries that I know of - the West Country Studies
Library, and the libraries at Barnstaple, Plymouth, and Torbay.

The book was published in 1930. F.L. Caunter published another book (Lyde
Family Records), which is in the holdings of the Family History Library in
Salt Lake City, and is catalogued as containing some Caunter records. I put
in a request for this book to be microfilmed but was told that they were
unable to obtain a copyright release and so couldn't film it.

My quandary is this: The author and his wife are both now deceased. I
believe the two books to have been self-published. At least one of the
books (Caunter Fam Rcds) apparently contains a great deal of information
about the family line I am researching, according to someone who saw the
author's notes before his widow died. If it was just a matter of a simple
look-up I know I could ask if there was anyone out there with access to one
of the four libraries listed above who would be willing to check it for me.
As it is, I can't obtain the book on Interlibrary Loan, I can't ask anyone
to photocopy it for me since it's still under copyright, and the odds of
finding it on an out-of-print bookseller list are slim (although I have been
looking on-line).

Anyone out there with any good ideas? Failing that, if anyone ever sees
this book in a bookshop, please let me know.
