Andrew:
Copyright doesn't come into it - you are only breaching copyright when you
sell anything you copy - if you are giving it someone to do research and
then only part of the info in book, there is no copyright problem. Tell the
person where it was obtained, and they in turn, if they are keeping their
genealogy in order as they go, will make a notation as such in their notes.
There has been a question about students using books in libraries for
research for years. Some authors say they should be receiving royalties
everytime a student copies even one paragraph - hey, I'm an author too, and
I wrote my books to inform people - but no law has yet been passed anywhere
that says you cannot share info for FREE!
And , by the way, most libraries will honour an interlibrary loan with
provisions that the book (or whatever) is back by a certain date. It's a
lot less time than the usual borrowing time, but, hey, a day or two is
longer than nothing at all!
