I have the following info on my Gt grandfather and would appreciate it if
someone could place his whereabouts in 1861. Hoping he would be in Devon?

1841 Census of Southampton John SPENCER age 3mths born Southampton.
1851 Census of Devon (Stoke Damerel) John SPENCER age 9, born Southampton.
1881 Census of Bristol John SPENCER age 39, born Southampton.

My reason for requesting this info is that I have John in South Africa in
1876 as a Captain in the Buffalo Volunteer Engineers. I do not know if he
married in England or in S.A. 1881 he was a widower in Bristol with a 1 year
old son born in East London S.A.John's eldest son, my grandfather) was born
in East London aprox 1865, so he was in S.A. 1871.

If I can locate a time when he left England I may be able to trace him in
S.A.
