I suggest also Holne. In a Devonshire accent the "n" is almost silent so
if an enumerator did not know the place he might well have put down "Hole".
I have noticed that errors in place names seem to get worse as you move
away from the location in question. The enumerator has less knowledge of
the placename, and often the person being enumerated was illiterate, so
there was no point in asking "how do you spell that". They just wrote
down something that sounded right.
