Marion recently sent this message regarding the IGI entry she had found for
two of her people. As it did not make too much sense to her and knowing that
I could access the transcription of the Devon & Cornwall Record Socty volume
of the Ottery St Mary parish registers transcription in our Toronto
Reference Library,
This is the same volume as used by the LDS to extract their Ottery St Mary
IGI entries and this is what I found:

Baptisms

1791 26 Dec John RIGGS son of Jane RIGGS and
(a dragoon named) John TAYLOR born 3 Feb 1792 (illeg)

1791 26 Feb Sarah RIGGS daughter of the above Jane RIGGs and John WHICKER
( a white bread maker) born 18 May 1788 (illeg).

Marion suggested I put this info on the list to help others to interpret
this sort of odd IGI entry. On first reading of an IGI entry like this it
may lead someone off on the wrong trail thinking that the two individals
named were married. Not so, as when the transcribed entry is checked it can
be seen that they were not. The one good thing about these Ottery St Mary
baptismal entries is that the fathers are named and that is unusual as
mostly the early registers do not give father's name when recording the
baptism of a bastard (illeg) child.
