Dear List,
I have an ancestor William WEBBER who on the 1871 census says he was a
Clerk, on the 1881 census says he was a Railway Clerk and on the 1891 census
says he was a Shipping Clerk. In 1878 on a marriage certificate I have
for him he says he was an Accountant. Im hoping that I have the right
person although everything seems to point in the right direction by
information I have from census material and a birth certificate I have for
his daughter (per the 1891 census) identifying mother and her maiden name.
His wife Kate died between 1881 and 1891 and therefore I had no way of
finding his wife other than ordering the childs birth certificate.
Im wondering if anyone knows if a Clerk would also be classed as an
Accountant.
Another shock find on Williams marriage certificate was his fathers
occupation which was Warehouseman. His father John died between 1861 &
1871, as his mother was a widow on the 1871 census.
On the 1851 and 1861 census John's occupation was Dairyman.
In 1881 (3 yrs later) on the marriage cert of Williams brother Hubert, it
had the word deceased in brackets under his father's name with his
occupation as Dairyman. There was no mention of John being deceased on
Williams marriage certificate.
Would anyone have any idea why Williams deceased father, John, would have a
different occupation stated on his marriage certificate.
(His mothers new husband was also a Dairyman - so there couldn't be any
confusion between the 2 "fathers" occupation).
I could get a death certificate if I can find the right John Webber who died
in Exeter between 1861 and 1871 (like a needle in a haystack), but even if
that told me he was a Dairyman, it still wouldn't explain the reason behind
why Warehouseman was on the marriage certificate.
