I am glad this group is getting off the ground.
I have been learning what I can for the past month or so, and have had my
own MtDNA tested as well as my brother's YDNA and my husband's.

I do have an interest in so-called deep ancestry but also in some more
recent ancestry. To be specific, my maiden name, Algeo, is not a common
one. Family legend gives several origins for this family (which is found
chiefly Scotland, around Glasgow and in northern Ireland). One is that the
family founder came from Italy. Another is that the family is originally
Spanish and came to Ireland via the Spanish Armada. There are also hints
at origins in Greece, ior were we perhaps Arabs, as in AL-Geo.

So one purpose is to try to get enough Algeo lines tested to see if they
converge on a common place of ancestry. Right now, my brother's Y DNA seems
to show Saxon ancestry, which is a result no one expected! I find this
basically to be a lot of fun.

similarly, my mother's ancestors are from Sicily. I had suspected Arab
ancestry, considering that Sicily was occupied by Arabs for some time. Lo
and behold, the maternal MtDNA matches most closely to a woman from the
Netherlands! So that will be a puzzle to chew on for quite some time, as
well as more conventional genealogical sources.

Hope we get a good discussion going ..

Santa T.
