Bob-

This is correct--you've got it! The sex-linked DNA: Y and mtDNA only pass
to children of the same sex (with the exception that mtDNA passes to ALL
children (but stops there if the children are male). Most of what we inherit is
autosomal (non sex-linked) but since we inherit half of that from our fathers
and half from our mothers and there isn't a method of determining which part
came from which parent, (in other words it isn't inherited intact as the
sex-linked DNA is) it isn't a reliable tool in determining ancestry.

As Mike pointed out though, in this type of case a more extensive test of
autosomal DNA (and more expensive) might be helpful. The reason the 37 marker
test was suggested is that the more markers the more accurate the results--12
marker tests can be misleading.

OK
So like the YDNA follows direct line father, son, grandson etc so the mtDNA
follows the line mother, daughter, granddaughter etc and the only time the
male mtDNA can be used to confirm a female relative is his mother or
sisters.
