Hi Barb
Yes there are a lot of things that are inherited, or we inherit a
predisposition towards. However its not a straight yes and No answer from
DNA,
Such things as environment. socio economic, lifestyle etc are all things
that influence the final result.
The DNA testing that we as genealogist do only cover the two sex portions on
one chromosomes Y and mt
It is in the other 22 chromosomes that all that inherited "stuff" lies eg
hair colour, eye colour, height, build (these last two are very much
affected by socio economic factors), diseases, flair towards arts, sciences
etc. Every day science is learning more and more about what results they get
actually mean. You can gene your total dna read at something like a mere
$15000.00.
I was reading a paper last night about the result that shows that a person
is pre disposed to late onset diabetes. But the big question they are facing
is "what does this really mean and how can we use this information?"
And there are two separate answers to this;
a. to the scientist it can be used to develop medications that can treat
the disease when detected, but probably more importantly to develop a means
to stop the disease developing.
b. To the individual and their doctor it can be a means of developing a
strategy to minimise the chances of the disease developing.
Again the socio economic factor and lifestyle are very prominent in the
degree of chances of the disease developing.
