Subject: [DNA-NEWBIE] New DNA matching tool (beta) at 23andme.com
Date: Mon, 26 Oct 2009 20:23:13 EDT
Ever since I was tested with 23andme.com (which tests not only Y-DNA and
mtDNA but whole genome DNA as well) I've been sort of at a loss to connect
with others who may be cousins. Making connections was hit or miss to say the
least. A couple days ago the company unveiled a new beta tool called
Relative Finder and I'm living proof that it works. I'm speechless (and anyone
who knows me will tell I'm SELDOM at a loss for words). <g>
Right now, with the new tool being in beta only those who agree to
participate in the beta testing can connect with others but the Relative Finder
gives you an overview individuals (anonymously) and the approximate
relationship between you and the other person. Most are merely "distant cousins" but
I have about a full page of listings where the match is closer--anywhere
from 3rd to 5th cousins. They give you a range of possibilities but also give
the PROBABLE degree of match.
My closest match contacted me today and it took us all of two messages
back and forth to figure out our match. Our great-grandmothers are sisters!
23andme's new tool was DEAD ON! 3rd cousins we are. We share 1.03% of our DNA
and have 2 matching segments.
I ask you, what other type of DNA testing and matching could have connected
with a cousin from my father's mother's mother's side of the family!
Amazing!
Joan
