This is not at ALL unusual...All people identified as being 100% Northern
European have some percentage of Middle Eastern blood. I've been tested with
23andme and in my medical data I learned I have a very rare KEL (non-ABO)
blood antigen. Only 8% of Northern Europeans (which I am identified as
being 100%) have this antigen. It is uncommon in ALL populations but the
mutation originated among the Arabs in the Middle East where 25% of the
population carry the antigen. I began comparing notes with others on a 23andme forum
and found a few others who carry this antigen AND are identified as being
100% Northern European. The only thing each of us has in common is
Scotch-Irish ancestry. Talking to some of the consultants we have figured out that
our mutation comes from someone who had this mutation and traveled to
Scotland or Northern Ireland thousands of years ago and spread the antigen
through a small portion of the Scotch-Irish population. It is a good bet that
all of us who carry this mutation are very distantly related.

I can't answer this scientifically but my Thomas family is E1b haplogroup
which has a Middle Eastern migration and we all show up with Middle Eastern
ancestry -- most around 8%. I'll be interested in the scientific
responses. Take care. Marilyn

Subject: [DNA-NEWBIE] Family Finder Population Finder query
Hi
Both myself and my maternal grandfather have taken the Family Finder
autosomal
DNAA etst at Family Tree DNA. To my surprise, we both have a significant
proportion of Middle Eastern DNA – he has 6.33%, and I have 8.2%.
I understand that autosomal DNA is inherited equally but randomly, so as a
rough
rule of thumb, that means that this DNA would have come from one of my (as
I
have a higher percentage) or his great great grandparents – am I on the
right
lines? I know all of my great great grandparents and most of his, and I
have
traced all my lines back to the 1700s, and have found no trace of a Middle
Eastern relative. Obviously there may have been a non-paternal event that
I am
unaware of, but how far back (roughly) should I be looking for this Middle
Eastern ancestor?
Many thanks
Liz
