Subject: [DODD-L] martin /dodd/mcdowell boys? choctaw co. 1850 alabama
Date: Sun, 25 Mar 2001 19:35:33 EST

Hi the list, I am new to searching for Martin folks. I have had a lead that
said my ggg grandmother was a MARTIN, and no documents to say, yea or nay.

Here is the basic family on 1850 census, choctaw co. alabama:
DOD, JOHNATHAN, 66, M, Gun Smith, SC,
Lusinda, 48, F, SC....said to be a MARTIN maiden name.
Wm, 32, M, Planter, AL
Henry, 27, M, AL
Caroline E., 11, F, AL
Isaac M., 9, M, AL
a son, ashley haywood dodd born 1815 NC and a son james riley dodd born 1830
ala.

All I do know of this family is that the father, johnathan or jonathan dod
(dodd) was in johnson co. NC in 1815 (tax census) and the son is listed as
born in NC (ashley b. 1815)---all other children born in ala.

The LDS archives gives "loucendia Martin DODD" burial in the MCDOWELL
Cemetery in Bladon Springs, ALA. She was alive in 1860 as head of household
in choctaw co. alabama with a child, male, age 14 by the name of dugal dodd.
We know nothing of who he was as he is n ot on the 1850 census.

The LDS archive submitter, suggests that loucendia martin dodd married a
mcdowell man and had these sons and they were raised as dodd men? Has anyone
any idea on how that could be? IF she married mcdowell before she married
dodd...and bore children--- which children would be mcdowell and which ones
would be dodd?? the descendants need to know? what happened to mcdowell and
why are the children called dodd? I was a step child and I was raised by my
true father's name- I -did not assume my stepfather's name.

WE have tried all we know to track this down and are at something of a
standstill. NO for certain proof of when jonathan dodd married loucendia
martin? and if she was born in 1802--for her to be the mother of ashley born
1815 is pushing it alittle, but we have had no other female name come up in
any searches.

There are martin familys and mcdowell familys in choctaw co. alabama. IF
you have any data on any of these familys ???and any legends that support
this soap opera--would you contact us please. thanks for any ideas or help.
IT has been suggested by the older children of ashley haywood dodd, and is
our most invasive ,long standing, family legend, that they were of native
american lineage?

Was the Martin family connected such--or the dodd--or possibly the cave
family that married ashley haywood dodd? WAS the mcdowell mother a native
american woman? Was the father also? there is a good mystery here and someone
has to know something of loucendia dodd buried in mcdowell land?---Bladon
springs? where is that? is it a county seat?

It is a matter of history that the US government moved all native americans
from choctaw co. alabama--out--it was the beginning of the trail of tears.
SO, it was a matter of hiding for many familys that had intermarried, they
had to become invisible and show no connection to the native americans that
were forced to leave that area. Familys hid their bloodlines because of that
government, problem and also because of the racial problems that made the
native american blood lines of lesser value than the european? This was a
time of class distinction still and the european way of thinking was breaking
down but still upheld by the religions and by the laws, unfortunately.

Ashley was born 1815-in a time that there still was Indian uprisings and
peace treatys in that area of alabama. It was a time just after the war of
1812 and many familys of NC and alabama were devestated by the war and the
hard living conditions caused by that war.

The choctaw county courthouse burned in 1871 and the county was created in
1847 from sumpter and washington counties. Clark co. was formed in 1812 from
washington co. also.

Does anyone know of a person who does lookup for probate in washington or
clark co's?

It seems our only hope to connect children is court records of many kinds,
marriage would help, also probate and wills would help..any ideas?
judy hugg grimes, yorbalinda, ca. and a passle of dodd familys west.
