G'day
I am new to the list, thanks to a little bird who informed me of it :).

I am researching my Donaghey family who come from the Castlederg area.
My GGGrandfather Patrick Donaghey born circa 1842. He emigrated to
South Australia in 1865, and married a Castlederg girl Mary McEnhill in
that year. On their marriage certificate Patricks father was recorded
as Mark Donaghey. Patrick was a blacksmith in Adelaide and tought his
own son to be one also. I presume then that Patrick would likewise have
been tought the trade by his father?
The Ulster Historical Foundation did a small amount of research on my
behalf, to no avail. One interesting point they made was that as
Patrick could not write he may have been an Irish speaker. They also
stated that as Castlederg was a border town, a lot of people came over
from Donegal for work around the markets. In 1836 Ordinance Survey
memoirs it was noted that there was only 1 smith whereas there was 20
spirit dealers....
According to family folklore, Patrick had a brother James who emigrated
to America around the same time (1865).
Being Catholic also brings difficulties to the search for these time
periods in Ireland.
If anyone is connected or think they may be I would love to hear from
you.

Bye for now

Carolyn Donaghey
