On page 27 of the Deutsch-Zerne Heimatbuch, it states:

"At the time of settlement, the settlers had been required to raise
silkworms and, for that reason, to plant mulberry trees. It was thought that
the settlers could improve their income with this source of revenue. It
never developed into anything significant. The fruits were used for making
Schnapps."

An amusing story regarding Schwobs and Schnapps follows on page 55.

Hi Brad.

The word Kukurutz must've had a different connection in another sentence.
I haven't read the book, so I don't know the story behind the word
Halbfrucht.
It can be interpreted in many ways.
We could interpret it as the wheat and rye being seeded together. If they
used both for making bread, the reason would be saving labour, time, land,
etc...
Roggen (rye) was used for many different things, - bread, feed and many
others.
Rye bread was used in the Banat and Batschka but not as much as the regular
white bread. The rye bread was heavier and harder than the white bread.
Therefore some people would mix the regular (winter) wheat flour with the
rye flour, so it wouldn't be so hard and heavy.
You will notice the difference between a regular white bread and rye bread.
A regular loaf of white bread rises higher, as to a loaf of rye bread.
The Roggen (rye) was seeded in the fall time the same as the winter wheat.

Sometimes Roggen (rye) was placed in a barrel for a while until it started
to ferment. Then was used to make home made medicine, (Schnapps).
I always thought the Schwobs don't drink. Or do they?
