I agree with you that Aloysia is derived from the masculine form,
"Aloysius." I think however, that "Aloysius" is much older than the
16th century. It is a very old Latin name.

I also agree that "Louise" is the feminine form of "Louis" ("Ludwig" in
German and "Luigi" in Italian) ...but I believe "Louis" and "Aloysius"
are two entirely separate given (Saints') names and are NOT derived one
from the other.

There is no doubt about the "mandatory" use of a Saint's name for
naming of Catholic Children in the time and place we are dealing
with... but the question is WHICH SAINT! It would not be good to pass
on incorrect information to your descendants in your research. I have
a strong "hunch" that you will wind up with "Aloysia" ...and from there
you might find a "nickname" or "abkurzung" (which you might know
already) such as "isa" or "Loysi."

I think I would research if further, beginning with the Catholic
Encyclopedia, which is on line. I would check under BOTH Saints, Louis
and Aloysius... and see if there is an indication that one name derives
from the other. I think you will find them to be SEPARATE names.

I will be eager to learn what you find out; and I will not be offended
to learn that I am wrong. It will not be the first time I have eaten
crow. I'll try to keep my foot out of my mouth... just in case there
is a need for me to eat crow.

Regards to all on the list! ~Dan
