Cornelia & Mike,
I have a simple question for you concerning Triebswetter. Have either of
you seen the name of "Barbier" in the records of this town? Your discussion
of the speaking of French got me to wondering about this. I understand that
the name Barbier comes from the Alsace Lorraine area, which would also
border Germany. My Grandmother and her sister had a relation or a distant
cousin by this name "Barbier" in the Chicago area. Since Triebswetter &
Keglewitschhausen are relatively close, your conversation got me to
wondering about this.

Thank you very much and we in the U.S.A will be enjoying our Labor Day
weekend!
Sincerely,

John J. Kornfeind
Glendale, AZ

Mike,

I've got a welcome present for you. Something à la "The Visitors" but it's
no joke.

Did you, as an attorney, know that Joseph Marschal was a juror in
Triebswetter?

In 1798 there've been ethnical unrests in in the village, which rooted in
the new priest refusing to speak French (which, in fact, was because his
French was very poor). It is said that at the time (28 years after the
setteling) there were about 300 people in the village who didn't understand
German at all, only French.

So, 12 men, including Joseph Marschal, have signed a petition to the church
authority, saying that, if needed, they will go with it even to His Majesty.
It was clear to the authority that they really mean it, so, in the end, they
gave them what they wanted: they assigned a French priest to Triebswetter.
Our 12 men were called trouble makers and some of them got even punished but
this is not unusual; isn't it often the sort of those who want to improve
the world?

The case is displayed over several pages in the Triebswetter Heimatbuch.

Cornelia
