I have known several Margarets in my life besides myself and they were all great gals in my opinion. I feel blessed that my mom and dad chose that name and love being a "Pearl". My daughter in law bought me a key chain with my name and it says that I am a "Heavenly Pearl". I hope that means the gates will open wide when I get up there to meet St. Peter.

My family calls me "Margie" and sings the song to me when the occasion calls for it. I love it!!

God bless all of you and a Happy All Saints Day. I am off to mass now and tomorrow we are going to the All Soul's Day mass at the cemetery where my parents and many friends are buried here in Mesa.

Hi all,

I checked several baby naming sources, and Gretel is a diminutive form of Margaret (Mar-gret; Gret-el), which means "Pearl," and makes perfect sense to me, because our Margaret is a gem! :-)

Well, you have just answered the question for me and for John as he said his
Aunt Margaret was called "Gretel" too. I thought that it might be a
nickname for Margaret, but I wasn't sure.

God bless, Margaret

I remember the "Madel" for a girl and "Boobala" for a boy. My grandmother
often called me "Gretel". A cucumber is a "gurke" She called cucumber
salad "gerken salat".

To Rose Mary, Eve, Alice, Anne, Alex and Nick:

Thanks for participating in my remembrances of "net" for "nicht" and the
insights on its other usages. Anne, I never heard "nett" used either. My
grandparents always used "hübsch".

At the risk of boring other List members, does anyone recall "boova" (my
best phonetic rendition) being used for "boy" and mädel for "girl". Not
until I got to college did I learn "knabe" and "mädchen".

When her garden was in full production, my grandmother made a delightfully
refreshing salad from thinly-sliced, fresh cucumbers. To my hearing, she
called it "umorgen salat". For many years I was content in thinking that
the German for cucumber was "umorgen". Well, it isn't! In fact, no German
dictionary I have ever consulted has the word "umorgen" or anything even
close to it.

However, more recently in perusing some of the DVHH Member exchanges on
foods, I detected the word "uborka". A little research revealed that
"uborka" is Hungarian for cucumber.

Grossmutter was probably saying, "uborka salat", an interesting gemisch of
the two languages.
