I think there may be some confusion on what Herr Stader's Sammelwerk
documents and I hope this helps to point not just John, but other
researchers as well into the correct direction with regard to lookups.
First, it helps to understand what the different books document. The
Sammelwerk does not document families coming to America in the late 1800s or
early 1900s; nor does it document the Hungarian villages that the families
came from.
Herr Stader's Sammelwerk documents families that generally migrated from
somewhere in Germany in the mid to late 1700s and typically where they were
traveling to in the Hungarian Kingdom when the records were recorded in
Vienna. They are also quite hit and miss with regard to who was traveling
with the primary person and I have yet to see a record recorded that said
they were traveling to a specific person. In other words there is little to
no lineage information recorded. Basically, it states when they passed
through Vienna, where they were going and sometimes if they had additional
travelers with them.
The proper way to try and find this type of information on Hupp and Poyte
families would be to:
A. Spend the time online at www.ellisisland.org and see if the ships
manifests detailing when the families emigrated to America can be found.
They could have arrived through the port of Baltimore; but most emigrants
arrived through New York City. The ships manifests detail the port that the
emigrants left, where they were traveling to, who they were traveling to and
about 20 other pieces of information that may or may not be pertinent to the
researchers work. Also they don't necessary document where the families
were from but rather the last village in which they were a resident before
they boarded a boat.
B. Get a village or family book from Jahrmarkt (if one exists) and see if
they were residents at the time being researched. One not being available,
then a list request for a Jahrmarkt family book lookup might work as well.
But this won't necessarily provide the information being researched either.
C. Rent the Catholic Church microfilms at an LDS family history center and
spend the research time reading the films looking for the birth, marriage
and death records to put the families together. Although more time
intensive, it is the best way to build families with accuracy.
My experience is from the old genealogy school prior to the 90s where we
didn't have access to compiled books in which to make requests. All to
often a more recent researcher asks for help (which most people here will do
when possible) without realizing what they are asking for. I have also seen
many instances where the compiled books were wrong and when I went back to
the microfilmed church records, the correct answer was found. The shortest
quickest route isn't always the best route to take when it comes to
research. I hope these tips will help everybody with their research.
