Who better to ask than all you good people with the world's wealth of
knowledge about Donegal. My grandfather covered his tracks extremely well.
However, when I was there last week (and really didn't want to leave!) I
was looking through the computerized printout of the parish of Inver for his
baptismal record. Having looked at many films of the original records of
various churches, ships lists etc., I know it is very easy to make a
"mistake" in transcription. That said, here is my quandry.
My grandfather, John MEEHAN/MEHAN was born 30 or 31 December 1861 to Sara
Cunningham Meehan/Mehan (like most, he went by both spellings). I didn't
find a MEHAN, but I did find a MOHAN--same birthdate, mother Sara Cunningham
and father Thomas. I did not see any Mohan families listed in Griffiths for
that time frame----later in the early 1900s yes, but not in the mid 1860s.
I couldn't trace further because the records didn't go any further back. I
know he had a brother, Daniel, born in 1859 but I couldn't find a record
going that far back. Is this just a coincidence or could I have made a
chink in that brick wall? He also had a brother, Thomas, and both he and
Dan named sons Thomas.
Our trip to Donegal was beautiful. The fine soft mornings gave way to
beautiful sunshine and the only problem we encountered was with the hauliers
strike when they deided to block traffic even into Killybegs. That was a
bigger mess than we had in Washington DC for a similar reason. We again
enjoyed the hospitality of Helena Cunningham at the Ocean View B&B and the
fantastic food at Kitty Kelly's. We are already starting the "kitty" for
another visit!
Thanks for any help you can offer. Kae
