Subject: [IRL-CO-DONEGAL] Questions to a list
On the 24th March I suggested that listers supply a complete set of known data about an ancestor they wanted to trace in order to help other listers in providing assistance.
One reply read
"Just wanted you to know that I have posted your "Questions to a List" to my
list: the KXXXY surname list.
That is well put! It's always hard for me to be informative without
sounding bossy!"
Another lister replied asking if "I belonged to the genealogy police" and thought these were "obnoxious requirements" Also - "So who died and left him boss? THAT is the question of the day. HOW rude to put off so many people like myself. I'm self-confident enough to
yell back and tell him off but what about the quiet, intimidated majority? The ones who will just go away and never post their interests"
How ironic, that this lister actually took my much maligned advice and posted complete details about their missing ancestor - the missing Irish individual in question, as I predicted, has now appeared, out of the woodwork complete with a named immigrant ship and an extended family. (Quad erat demonstrandum).
I think that the "intimidated majority" will hang in there, ask more focussed questions and perhaps as a consequence have a better chance finding their ancestors too.
As they used to say down at my police station
"Ask ze right questions and you vill get ze right answers"
