Anyone got any ideas why a stone mason should wish to go to Madeira in 1836?

A several times Great Uncle did, leaving his will before he went in case he
did not return. The will was proved 2 years later following his death, so it
wasn't a good move on his part!

Any bright ideas gratefully received1
