Hi Peter
I have a book on Melbury Abbas . in North East Dorset which refers to a Mill
in the parish called Spragues Mill. There is no other information about it,
but presumably it was so named because it once belonged to a family called
Sprague.
I don't know that this is of any help to you. The book also says that the
name Sprague is found as Spragg in some records.
Reaney & Wilson in "A Dictionary of English Surnames" give the earliest
examples of Spragg/Sprague as bing found in Suffolk (UK) . They say it is a
voiced form of the wrod 'Sprak' which in turn is a form of Spark. It meant
someone who was lively.
Happy Hunting
Helen
