Interesting question, Diana.
On one of the Welsh lists once there was a discussion about men missing from
the census on census night and it was suggested that they may have been on
night shift and so were not included by an enumerator who kept strictly to
the instructions he was given - so if they were in the house bodily, he
didn't count them, and those working in the mines were not counted.
As far as shipping goes
1841census - records the number of men aboard Navy or merchant ships but
not the names
1851 census - in theory the names of those aboard Navy or merchant ships
away at sea should have been included but were not always. The crews of
ships on rivers, in ports and in terretorial waters were listed at the end
of the registration district in which the nearest port lay.
1861 census - ships at sea and at foreign ports were enumerated in separate
schedules.
There is a PRO book no 93 which indexes the names of the ships in each
census, giving their location and piece number.
The LDS Church have also produced an index on microfiche giving the names of
all people who were serving on merchant or naval ships in 1861.
Unfortunately I don't know that the little fishing boats would be included
in any of this. I am 'out of my depth' here! I suspect they were not
included in any census. I would be interested to hear if anyone knows more
about this.
If you have lost ancestors in the census don't forget workshouses, prisons,
hospitals etc. I had 'lost' my G G G aunt's husband. She and her two young
children were lodging with her brother in Poole, but her husband wasn't with
them. I could find no record of his death, and thought as they family were
in Poole (they came from Wiltshire), he might be at sea. The 1881 census
index answered my question. He was a patient in the Wiltshire Lunatic Asylum
in Devizes!
With reference to Bob Hatcher's original message - is there any evidence
that labourers from the north of the county sailed in the Newfoundland
fishing fleet? I have not come accross any of evidence of this in my
research, so again would be pleased to learn more.
