Hi Desley
Please excuse the preamble, but in view of one or two other
queries on the list recently it might be worth mentioning at the
same time - Census film exists for most UK counties for 1841,
1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and from 1 Jan 2002 an on-line
version of 1901, we hope.
However, with one or two minor exceptions, only the 1851, 1881
and in Dorset's case the 1891 census has been indexed. So if
anyone want a look-up for anything other than these three years
its usually a case of DIY (do it yourself).
With regard to your particular query Desley I've looked at some
1841 films and they seem to come in two categories: as the
enumerators filled in their sheets in pencil (as instructed) some
of the pages have certainly faded and can give the impression of
being blank on occasion and where it is readable the film is
sometimes so scratched it can be very very difficult to read and
I have to limit myself to short stints on the film because of the
concentration needed - not a lot of fun really :-( But having
said that a lot of people do find info, so there are a lot of
films that are readable for 1841. Perhaps a case of "yer payz
yer money and takes yer chance" to put it in the vernacular :-)
Regards
Paul

I'm aware that the LDS have a listing for one on their catalogue for the Census but others have advised me that when they ordered some 1841 Census that it was mostly blank and then I been told that one does not exist for these two areas. Could SKS please advise me which is correct. I don't want to wait months for a microfilm if its of no use.
