HEMP & FLAX - WEST DORSET STORY
PEOPLE - PLACES - PRODUCE
EXHIBITION

Saturday & Sunday 14th & 15th October 2000

The importance of Hemp and Flax to the area is being researched by the West
Dorset Group of the S & DFHS as a Millennium project and part of our Society
25th Anniversary. This follows on from the very successful Exhibition we held
at Easter and the publication " Dorset people involved in the growing of Hemp
and Flax 1782-1793". A symposium/workshop on "Social unrest in Dorset in the
1800s" is being held on Saturday 14th October in Bridport .

The exhibition focuses on the growing of hemp and flax and the allied
industries of rope, net, twine and sailcloth manufacture in the West Dorset
area over the ages. The importance of the trade to the area and specifically
Bridport is a major feature of the exhibition.

Displays include:
Documents, maps, photos and artefacts.
Bounty Claims 1782 - 1793, list of over 800 growers.
Villages involved with Hemp and Flax.
Industry in Bridport - past and present.
Trade with North America and Russia.
Family Histories of local families involved in the trade,
from the factory owners to the hemp and flax growers.
Migration from the area to other parts of England and all over the world.
