Thought it was a good time to update my Dorset interests. My main family
link is DOWNTON, around Buckland Newton, Holwell and Glanvilles Wootton. My
great great grandfather Charles was born in 1857 in BN, eldest son of John
DOWNTON/Elizabeth HAINES. There were (at least 6 brothers and sisters) from
1857 to 1866. John DOWNTON died in 1874. Charles was a shepherd and married
Emily Maria COLE in 1879, had 6 children and moved to the Isle of Wight in
1891 (just after the census). Emily died in 1902 and in 1912 he married
Henrietta NORTHOVER from Longfleet. Henrietta is the daughter of Thomas
NORTHOVER, the oil merchant (I think there is still a NORTHOVER's Oil
Merchants in Dorset).

At some point after John DOWNTON died, his widow Elizabeth moved to Chaldon
Herring and was there in both 1881 & 1891 with two or three of her sons.
However I cannot find any trace of these brothers and sisters except in the
census records. The children were: Sarah (apparently born 1857 in BN - not
sure if she and Charles were twins, I will check this with the GRO), Mary
Ann (1859-1860), Amelia Ann (1861-?) found in Chaldon Herring in 81, Robert
George (1862-?) in Chaldon herring in 81 & 91, Tom (1864-?) also in CH in 81
& 91, and William James (1866-?) - in CH in 81 but not 91. One of these
children also had a daughter Frances, she was living with her grandmother in
81 & 91.

Would really like to find out anything about any of the brothers and sisters
of Charles.

Other Dorset names linked to the above family are COLE, DUNNING & MULLETT.
