Hi Robert
You'll find quite a few mentions of the name BISHOP in some of the
extracts of Bridport area PRs that I've put on-line at:
http://www.btinternet.com/~PBenyon/W_Dorset/Index.html
but they are not for dates as early as the 17th Century: in the main
are only rudimentary extracts and I may well have missed many. It is
certainly quite a common surname in that area. My wife has a connection
ie a George DARBY married a Mary BISHOP at Bridport on 30 April 1771.
There are earlier possibilities, but at the present that is all they
are!
