Dear List,
I will have the pleasure of a visit to Dorset Sept 4 - 12, with my
cousin. At this time, I'm trying to put together what we've learned, to
plan some local research.
Our grandfather Victor H.C. Lovell was born in Poole, 5 Apr 1881
to Tom and Lizzy Lovell
Census records from 1881 and 1891 gave me a start & then I paid for
certificates of his parents' marriage:
Elizabeth (Lizzy) Hannah Campbell m. Tom Lovell (Labourer)
on 17 Nov 1877 at Litchett Minster
I cannot locate my great-grandmother Lizzy's birth: we have family photos,
and a gravestone which lists her birthdate as :25 Jul 1851 in "London St
James". (She died 24 Feb 1948)
However, her brother Albert's birth certificate was located, and it shows
their father as:
William Henry Campbell, Smith.
and mother as Hannah Campbell formerly BUDGELL.
(William and Hannah were then living in Bothenhampton, in Burton Bradstock,
Bridport)(1863)
Gr-Grandfather Tom's father was Isaac LOVELL and his mother Martha KELLOWAY
(or Killoway) They show up on the 1881 census for Lytchett Minster with
their 13 year old daughter Annie.. There is info about this family on the
IGI. I hope to locate BMD records to substantiate what is listed.
The 1881 census shows Hannah Campbell a widow, living with Lizzy, Tom (now
a Tile-maker), and their one-year-old daughter Lillian in Corfe Mullen.
Hannah says she was born in Yeovil. reported age, 57. (birth year ca
1825).
I hope to get earlier census information about these families, and to search
for BMD's. Should I reserve a table at the Dorchester Record Office first?
Go to the place where BMD's are held to do a search (per recent thread.) Or?
Do I go to Yeovil to search for Hannah and William? Neither individual is
in the IGI, and I found no info on the "English Origins site". I have, of
course, learned that BUDGELL is a fairly rare name.
Does any one else have any BUDGELL connections?
Thanks for any advice or info.
I'm very excited about the trip, and look forward to seeing the countryside
and hearing the voices of Dorset.
