BRAY Joseph, (according to obit and cemetery records in US) b. Sept 28, 1840 England. Daughter's birth record in Iowa, USA says Woodbridge. Found in Iowa, USA county he lived and died in found a note saying and I quote "I find in my book", Ancient Parish registers Woodbridge in Suffolk County with records starting in 1545. The only Woodbridge parish."
A kind woman in England went to the FHC in London and had a look and there were NO Joseph Bray's in the Suffolk area at all. There was one in Manchester in the county of Lancashire, registered in the 4th quarter of 1840. He was Joseph Robert Allen Bray. There were three registered in the 4th quarter of 1841, two of them were in the county of Cornwall one was in Bodmin and one in Redruth, and the third was in Holbeach in the county of Lincolnshire. She looked at her atlas and saw that there are, in fact two other places called Woodbridge-one in Dorset and one in Devon. Is there someone on list that might be kind enough to see if Joseph might show with his parents and siblings if any in the 1851 census? She said that there was obviously quite a family of Bray's in both Manchester and in Cornwall- two more Joseph Brays were registered there in the 3rd quarter of 1840-i.e. they were born between June and August of that year.
MY Joseph Bray according to his obit and his cemetery record here in Iowa say he was born Sept 28, 1840. The 1900 census says he was born Sept 1841, that he was naturalized 1869 and had been in the country 31 years. He married here in the US in 1872. His obit said he left his home and family so assume he came alone to the US. I have not a clue as to his parents or possible siblings. His obit said that he was born Wallhurst. ?? Can someone help me?
Regards,
Barb Drummer, Iowa, USA
