May I second Heather's suggestion!

A few years ago I was investigating my Ggrandfather's career in the
Dorset Constabulary and received a copy of the "Examination of a
candidate for the situation of Constable". This provided information on
, among many other things, where and when born, trade, marital status,
number of children, previous employment etc .

The P R Dept were extremely helpful!
