Subject: [DOR] ADMIN: a few reminders and some information
Date: Mon, 04 Aug 2003 09:32:06 -0400

Dear subscribers,

A few reminders and some helpful -- I hope! -- information. :-)

<<< Commercial messages >>> RootsWeb's AUP states "Content submitted
for the purpose of commercial use, advertising or fee for service is
prohibited." When referring others to books, magazines, etc., please be
careful that your message doesn't appear to be an advertisement and be
sure to omit all references to money amounts.

<<< Subject lines >>> If you want your message read, be sure that the
subject line is relevant to your message (what is your message about?)
and includes pertinent surnames. Well written subject lines will
benefit the poster and the reader. Subject lines such as "lookup
requested," "my family," "my interests," "family history" (duh! it's
all about family history! <g>), "census lookup," etc., don't tell the
reader anything of value. Type surnames in all caps, both in the subject
line and in the body of the message. If you are responding to a
message with a poor or inadequate subject line, please amend it. If the
subject line was originally "Looking for my family," it could be amended
"SMITH 1851 census (was "looking for my family"). Never leave
"LISTNAME-D Digest V## ####" in a subject line.

<<< Snip >>> When you respond to a message, please snip (trim) the
original message and quote only the pertinent bits we need to follow the
thread. Remove the previous message tag lines and any tags placed there
by Ancestry or by the original poster's ISP.

<<< Forwarded messages >>> Subscribers may wonder why some messages are
forwarded to the list by me. There are several reasons a message may be
forwarded to the list by an administrator:
- The message bounced to the administrator because RootsWeb's
computers didn't recognize the subscriber
- The message bounced to the administrator because RootsWeb's
computers didn't like or can't understand something in the subject line
(usually numbers or certain words, like 'subscribe')
- The poster is subscribed with one address but attempted to post
from another.
- The poster is on the reject list for violating list rules. (Anyone
on the reject list is still subscribed to the list and receives
messages, but messages from that subscriber to the list are bounced to
the admin for vetting.)

Okay, that's the end of today's lesson. Remember: there will be a test!

Best wishes,
Lynne
List Admin.
