Hi John,
I don't know if this is her on 1851 census.
Living at Netherbury
Rachel LEGG aged 26 born Mapperton House servant. There are several LEGGs
living in Netherbury at that time.
I did a 5 year check and she is the only Rachel LEGG.
I checked Mapperton on the 1841 census and she is not there although there
are some LEGGs living there.
I would say she was either raised by her mother or her maternal
grandparents. I have often found they stayed with the mother but if the
mother later married sometimes the child would be sent to the grandparents,
if the husband was unwilling to accept the child.
My base born GG grandmother was raised by her mother's sister.
Best wishes
Terri

> Hi Listers,
> On 21st January 1825, a bastardy order was issued in
Sturminster Marshall, on my gg grandfather Abraham LEGG stating that he did
".. beget Mary RABBITS with a female child.." In the Sturminster Marshall
baptisms, there is a record for a Rachel LEGG baptised 30th January 1825,
daughter of Mary RABBETS, and because of this I have assumed that Rachel is
Abraham's daughter
> I have a copy of the order but would like to know what were the
practices at that time and what would have been the most likely course of
events to have happened to the child? I do know that Abraham did not marry
her nor did he adopt the child. Do you have any advice on where I should be
researching to find a trace of her?
