I had a few free minutes free on my lunch break today and decided to see what I could find on the surname Doss/Dorse in Ireland. Here's what I found:

1. No one by that surname was born between 1864 and 1868 anywhere in Ireland.
2. No one by that surname was married in Ireland between 1845 and 1868.
3. No one by that surname is listed on Griffith's Valuation (1848), which is a tax list covering 80 to 90% of Irish households during the Potato Famine.

It looks like the surname did not exist in Ireland in the mid-1800s, so if there are Doss families in Northern Ireland today, they moved there within the past 150 years.

Sorry if that's upsetting to anyone! I'm just trying to get our lineage traced correctly.

If anyone wants to look up any of their other Irish families on the 1848 tax list, it's available at www.ireland.com/ancestor. There's a charge to see the actual data, but you can conduct a surname search for free.
