From my records, our Dower's started in Newfoundland with James Herbert
Dower. Some of the Dower's from Conche, Newfoundland moved to the United
States from Newfoundland.
Here is some info on James Herbert Dower and I am always trying to find more
going back years before him. There has been a dead end there.

James Herbert Dower
1773 - Born, Eastbourne, England
1802 - Sent to Newry, Ireland in November or December to lead an
investigation for the English into allegations of misconduct by British
soldiers.
1803 - September 25, sailed to Bordeaux, France
1805 - 1811 traveled first to Boston, then Washington/Baltimore area, later
to West Indies before returning to France.
1809 - Engaged to Pauline Duval in Washington/Baltimore. She died of
injuries from a horse riding accident Mat 5, 1809 just days before they were
to be married.
1811 - JHD returned to France and married Hortense De Rohan (mother to Mary
Dower Flynn, Kate Dower Bromley, Ellen Dower Poor and John Dower).
1811 - 1816 JHD bought the 188 ton Brigantine Urdu in Holland
1816 - First sailed to Newfoundland in May arrived in June established
settlement, Conche
1816 -1820 made several trips between Conche Newfoundland and Conche France
1820 - JHD moved his family (the 4 children) to Conche Newfoundland. There
mother died of diphtheria a few weeks before.
