In Newbury, MA, on Nov. 4, 1731, John Downing m. Tabitha Deland. There has
been uncertainty in the past about his identity. Circumstantial evidence
indicates that he was the son, b. 1708, of David and Susanna (Roberts)
Downing, of Ipswich and Gloucester. The evidence is three-fold: (1) the
names of his children, including David and Susanna, (2) the presence in
Newbury at the same time of close relatives of the one born in 1708, and (3)
the proximity of Newbury to the Ipswich-Gloucester line which formed the
south boundary of the farm deeded to David Downing by his parents, John and
Mehitable (Braybrook) Downing. A possible line of search for added evidence
would be Newbury deeds, looking for deeds of Downing or relatives (esp.
Roberts), which might show them witnessing one another's deeds. Your
comments welcomed.
