Hello Gordon,
How could I not rise to Sharon's challenge to reply on-list ?
<VBG>
I preface this reply with "I am in NO WAY a convict expert" ....
Edward BARNETT # 1800 received a Ticket of leave 1-5-1853 and Conditional
Pardon 7/1854 (Erickson vol 2 'Bond')
although unfortunately I could not see that the Register for convict #1800
still exists. (Acc 1156 R series) which would have given next of kin.
I do see from Acc1156/C21 -
E BARNETT was appointed clerk in the convict depot Guildford on 2/2/1855
E BARNETT was appointed to 2nd Clerk in the Stewards Office 26/12/1856 [ I
pressume that was at Fremantle - LT ]
E BARNETT resigned 19/10/1857 "to benefit his condition " the wage for this
position was about 100 pound per year.
my intuition whispers to me that they are the same man - but I agree you DO
need proof.
Many people become despondent over researching from interstate - but there
are many options available -
in your particular case the following are available to you from ACT -
interlibrary loan of 'Convict Records of Western Australia' by Gillian
O'Mara , or purchased from LISWA (see website) bookshop it would probably be
under $20 postage included I would think.
AJCP CO18 records for 1853-1857 , reels 460 to 468 and 752to 760 may well
give more details - eg in the quarterly civil servants staff schedule
returns. there may also be entries for E BARNETT, the convict , mentioned
prior to his TOL.
The marriage in Guildford may be available on LDS films - try locality
guide - WA convict search - I do not know which church your couple were
married in - sometimes the church registers have more detail than the
marriage liscence. I ? think at Battye there is a fiche series Early
marriages in WA - details from the church records I seem to recall.
Pyrenees surgeon's log AJCP reel 3208 folio 62
AJCP P-Com 2 files - AJCP reels 5971 to 5991 - there is a microfiche index
that someone on DPS may own & do the lookup for the index. next of kin
often listed on reels
British Parliamentary papers will have the Comptroller General's half yearly
reports - in the National & most state libraries.
HO 16 Central Criminal court - AJCP reel 1545
there are probably many more avenues .......many of which would be available
in WA only too of course.
Not all transported men were uneducated layabouts - and a crime of 'forgery'
suggests at least the possibility of some educational background -which is
why I would look in the surgeon's log - his good behaviour ? - possibly may
have 'scribed' for the surgeon.?? It is known to have happened on some
voyages.
it is difficult to know where you have looked already as you did not say.
food for thought,
regards,
Lyn Todd
