Hi Ann,
To scan negatives or positives (slides/transparencies) you need a
special scanner such as the Nikon Coolscan. You will also need the
appropriate software as well. The process once you have the
equipment is quite simple and I have taught myself the necessary
skills.
Unless you are likely to have hundreds to scan or you are very keen
on photography then the scanner cost is a little prohibitive,
somewhere in the range of $1,200 - $1,500.
There are a number of commercial businesses where you can have slides
and negatives scanned.
