Not quite "smother PAF", but more correctly "steal every GEDCOM file you
have"!

Under windows, different file extensions can be linked to different
programs, so that when you click on a file to open it, Win determines (I
think from data stored in the registry?) which program to use to open the
file. That is why clicking on file xxx.doc will automatically start up WORD
(as an example).

FTM is notorious for "claiming" the .GED extension as its own. When you
installed FTM, it added the required entry to the registry(?) so that,
whenever you click on a file with a .GED extension, it is opened and viewed
using FTM.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, because the GEDCOM file is not
physically changed, nor is it permanently loaded into your FTM database.
The main advantage is that it gives you a formatted view of the GEDCOM file.
