Subject: New Series of SMH Death Indexes
Date: Sun, 19 Nov 2000 22:45:06 +1100
As of tonight, when the first file was received, we are actively indexing
death notices from the entire run of the SMH, from 1832(?) onwards.
Our current series, from 1986 onwards, remains unchanged. The target here
is still 100% coverage by the middle of next year.
The new series, which will be called the SMH Historical Series, allows us
to index individual days from any year at all, and include them on the web
site (once I work out the best way to do it!) First results will be
available after our next web site update, currently scheduled for early
January.
This all came about when Jennifer Burt of Batemans Bay contacted me, saying
she had just been given a bound volume containing all the SMH issues for
January - March 1875, and did we want to index the deaths? Did we ever!
Obviously, we will never get 100% coverage of this period - not in our
lifetimes, anyway! Aside from the fact that scattered individual years have
already been published (and you know my attitude to duplicated indexing
effort <g>), the logistics are just impossible. So - the target is to take
any and every date that anyone cares to index, and include it. That means
if anyone out there has even one complete copy of the day's death notices
from any pre-1986 SMH, then you are a candidate to add it to the site. If
you fall into this category, please contact me.
At this stage, I have no idea how large this index will grow - all I know
is that we will have Jan/Feb/Mar 1875 covered initially. The rest is up to
anyone reading this post.
