Address: Indian Territory five years
Before that: born in Georgia
Father: Crawford Duke, dead, would be 70 years old if living, born
Mississippi- He thinks, and claimed to be the son of Moses Duke. Father
and Mother recognized as colored in Georgia
Mother: Aggie, dead
Q: " What were your grand parents on your mother's side; what race of
people were they?"
A; " They was - I don't know what race of people they were."
Q: " What race of people were they - negroes or white people?"
A: " Negroes of course."
Claim through father
Last appeared before the Commission : 9 Jan 1900
Question if he knows: Joseph L. Mixon and Elizabeth Foster -no
Grandfather: Moses Duke
Q: " Was Crawford Duke an illigitimate son of Moses Duke:"
A: " Yes sir."
Q: " By a negro wife?"
A: " No sir, I don't say that he was married to my grandmother; he died when I
was quite young."
Examination by Attorney J. C. Ralls:
Q: " Your father's mother was a slave of Moses Duke was she not and
Belonged to him?" A: " well I don't know."
Q: " Is that your understanding?"
A: "That is my understanding as well as I remember."
Q: "That's where she got the name Duke?" A: " Yes sir."
Q: " That is the mother of your father and that is where your negro blood
Comes from is it?"
A: "From my mother"
Q: " Wasn't your father part negro?" A: "Well I don't know sir."
Q: " Was his mother a negro?" A: "I don't know sir."
Q: "Was your father ever owned as a slave?" A: " I don't know sir."
"The applicant has the features and appearance of a person of mixed
white and negro blood; black kinky hair, gray eyes; complection of a mulatto."
