BBrock:
I found information on this disgraceful war entitled "The Disgraceful Affair",
the Black hawk War by Cecil Eby.
Eby's description of this so-call War in which a small band of peaceful Sauk
Indians led by the aging Black Hawk was sacrificed. Reason was Land greed and
political ambition." quoting Eby, " Among The green officers unable to maintain
discipline in his company was a pock faced, stoop-shoulder, slab-sided assistant
store-keeper from New Salem....." > "The first order Capt. Abe Lincoln ever gave
to his men , received the retort, "Go to the devil; Sir."
Why they ELECTED him: they would be able to do as they liked under Abe.
[Did he inhale???] [Or was war against his Religion or did he evade the
draft???]
Lincoln, a tender-hearted fellow of twenty-three, was averse to blood-shed.
Reason for joining war was a POLITICAL one--------- six weeks before he had
filed as a CANDIDATE for [ the Ill...emc] legislature.
This is quite an amazing story,. He had very little command of the troops and he
was mostly noted for his jest. This was a "Minor War" in the State of Illinois."
"Yes, Abraham Lincoln participated in the Black Hawk War which he and others
characterized as that "Disgraceful Affair", according to Cecil Eby.
The war was classified as a local incident, insignificant in terms of lives lost
and dollars spent, it is an integral part of the peculiarly American Tragedy of
Frontier History.
As during all early American Wars, the locals form their own ranks and ELECTED
their officers. Lincoln {see above} emc
